To ensure maximum event safety, visitor protection, and the well-being of humans and animals during outdoor sports events, a fully automated lightning warning system from COPTR® has been installed at the prestigious Düsseldorf-Grafenberg racecourse.
The system is designed to detect dangerous thunderstorm activity with high precision using real-time lightning data from certified detection networks (BLIDS/ALDIS). Based on the internationally recognized DIN EN IEC 62793 standard, it enables early, reliable, and location-specific warnings through a three-stage alert logic:
Pre-warning (lightning detected within 15 km)
Alarm (lightning within 10 km)
All-clear (no lightning for 20 minutes)
These alerts are communicated via visual and acoustic warning devices on-site and can be automatically triggered without manual input. The system can also be linked to central emergency protocols, ensuring that operational decisions – such as race delays, spectator instructions, or evacuation measures – are taken promptly and based on standardized, legally robust information.
The COPTR® lightning warning system is especially suited for use in critical infrastructure, such as:
Outdoor sports venues and racecourses
Equestrian facilities and stadiums
Public parks, airports, and industrial sites
Areas with large crowds or exposed personnel
It represents a significant safety upgrade and a proactive step toward compliance, liability reduction, and climate-resilient infrastructure in the face of increasingly frequent and severe weather events.
This installation supports:
Rider safety
Visitor and staff protection
Animal welfare during sudden weather changes
Organizational risk management
The system is low-maintenance, network-independent, and allows seamless integration with existing safety frameworks.
We are proud to contribute to the racecourse’s safety strategy and support the city of Düsseldorf in enhancing protection against extreme weather events.
